A Bold & Beautiful Rongai Kilimanjaro Climb
The 7-day Rongai Route offers a rare and peaceful way up Kilimanjaro — approaching from the north, near the Kenyan border. It’s quieter, drier, and full of open views. You’ll walk through the rain forest, climb through dry mountain lands, and sleep beneath skies full of stars.

Top 3 Rongai Climb Highlights
Remote Start

The Rongai route begins far from the usual crowds. It’s not rare to spot colobus monkeys or even buffalo tracks in the lower forest. You feel like an explorer stepping into wild country.
Mawenzi Peak Views

As you climb higher, the sharp spires of Mawenzi Peak rise beside you. It’s Kilimanjaro’s lesser-known summit, and its dramatic shape adds a real “wow” factor to your trek. You will never forget this experience.
Crossing the Saddle

Walking across the wide, windswept saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo is like stepping onto another planet. It’s dry, silent, and surreal, a powerful moment of experience.
Itinerary
We begin at Rongai Gate, close to the Kenyan border. The trail starts gently, winding through quiet countryside and into the mountain forest. This side of Kilimanjaro is dry and peaceful, with fewer people and more chances to see wildlife. You might spot monkeys swinging in the trees or hear birds calling through the leaves. By the time we reach Simba Camp, we’re out of the thick forest and settling into open grasslands.
Expert tip: Take your time today — it helps your body adjust to the mountain.
The forest begins to fade, and the trail opens up to wide views of the mountain. You’ll walk through a mix of bushes and dry grass, with the pointed peak of Mawenzi often in sight. The path is steady and not too steep, giving you time to enjoy the quiet beauty around you. We reach Second Cave Camp by early afternoon, where you can rest, eat, and watch the sky turn golden as the sun sets.
Expert tip: Try to eat well even if your appetite is low — it helps with energy and altitude.
We leave the open land and begin climbing steadily toward the base of Mawenzi. The trail becomes rockier, and the air a bit thinner. You’ll feel the mountain now — the quiet, the space, the challenge. As we walk, the views grow more dramatic, with Kibo (Kilimanjaro’s highest peak) rising ahead and Mawenzi beside us. Kikelewa Camp is tucked into a sheltered spot near a small mountain stream.
Expert tip: If you wake up in the night, look up — the stars here are breathtaking.
Today’s hike is short but steep. You’ll climb up a ridge and suddenly the view opens — rocky hills below and giant peaks above. We arrive at Mawenzi Tarn by midday. It’s one of the most beautiful camps on the mountain, sitting below the jagged spires of Mawenzi, right next to a small alpine lake. This extra night here helps your body get used to the altitude and gives you a calm place to reflect and rest.
Expert tip: Use the afternoon for a short walk. Moving helps you acclimatize better
We head out early across the wide saddle that links Mawenzi and Kibo. It’s dry and open here, like walking across the moon. The land is silent, the sky huge. This is where you start to feel how far you’ve come. Kibo Hut, our base camp for the summit, sits at the foot of the peak. We arrive by early afternoon so you can rest, eat, and get ready for the night ahead.
Expert tip: Drink water often today. Stay warm. Try to nap before the midnight climb.
Just before midnight, we start the final push to the summit. It’s dark and cold, but the stars above light our path. Step by step, we climb up the steep slope. This is the hardest part — but also the most rewarding. As the sun rises, we reach Stella Point, and the sky explodes in color. A little further, and we arrive at Uhuru Peak — the roof of Africa. You made it.
After taking in the view, we begin the long walk down to Horombo Hut. It’s a big day, full of challenge and pride. You’ll sleep deeply tonight.
Expert tip: Keep moving slowly and trust yourself. You’re stronger than you think.
We begin the final stretch down the mountain. The trail takes us through alpine meadows and back into the rainforest. The air grows thicker, and birdsong returns. As we get closer to the gate, you’ll feel the mountain behind you — and the memory of what you just did beginning to settle in. At Marangu Gate, you’ll get your summit certificate and a warm meal. You’ve done something amazing.
Expert tip: Celebrate every step — this is your moment.
We finish our journey with a gentle descent to Mweka Gate. The forest returns as we approach the gate, and you’ll notice how different it feels now that you’ve completed the trek. The air is thick again, and the sounds of wildlife welcome you back. At Mweka Gate, we’ll gather for a final celebration, and you’ll leave with a sense of accomplishment, memories of a lifetime, and a new understanding of what it means to summit a mountain.
