7 Days Shira Climb

A Bold Journey on the Shira Route

For those looking for a quieter, off-the-beaten-path Kilimanjaro climb, this route offers something truly special. It begins high on the Shira Plateau, where the journey starts with open skies, wide moorlands, and sweeping views all around. Though shorter in duration, it delivers big drama, as you walk through remote trails, rare landscapes. You will experience moments that stir your spirit with every step.

The Journey

From the first step across the vast Shira Plateau, the trail feels different. It’s not just the altitude, it’s the space, the silence, and the sense of being somewhere sacred.

The accomplishment

Shira is not an easy climb. The altitude starts high, and there’s little room for rushing. You'll gain in return is confidence, calm, and the quiet joy of doing something hard, and doing it well.

Our guides are trained to monitor your health, but also your spirit by cheering you on, checking in, and creating a supportive, team-focused journey. We combine strong logistics with heart making sure the adventure feels personal, safe, and unforgettable.

Top 3 Shira Climb Highlights

The Shira Plateau

Starting here feels like stepping onto another planet. The air is crisp, the land wide and quiet. The first day offers views that other routes only get much later and being in this vast landscape from the beginning sets the tone: this is a special trek.

Lava Tower

This strange-looking rock stands tall in the middle of the alpine desert, almost like a giant castle. As you walk past it, you’re at a very high altitude (about 4,600 meters), which can be hard, but it really helps your body get used to the mountain.

Barranco Wall

Climbing this steep wall is more fun than it looks. You’ll use your hands a bit, but it’s safe and exciting. We tackle it early in the morning, moving together as a team. From the top, you get amazing views of the Karanga Valley below.

Itinerary

We start the climb from Shira Gate, already high up on the mountain. Right away, you’ll notice the open skies and wide moorland around you. The air is fresh and cool, and the trail is gentle as we make our way across the Shira Plateau. You’ll pass low shrubs and strange plants that only grow up here. It’s quiet, peaceful, and the views stretch out in every direction. By the time we reach Shira 1 Camp, the sky is huge above us, and the stars begin to appear.

Expert tip: Go slow today — you’re already at high altitude, so take your time.

Today’s walk is steady and open. We continue across the plateau, heading east. You’ll notice the landscape changing as we gain more height — the air gets thinner, the plants get smaller, and the sun feels stronger. This is a good day to listen to your body and find your rhythm. By the time we reach Shira 2 Camp, you’ll feel more used to the altitude, and you’ll be treated to an amazing sunset over the plains below.

Expert tip: Keep your camera handy — this is one of the best spots for photos.

We start the day by climbing the Barranco Wall. It looks scary at first, but it’s more fun than it seems. You’ll use your hands a bit to climb, and the views from the top are amazing. After the wall, the trail goes up and down through wide valleys and strange rock shapes. Karanga Camp is set on open ground, with views that stretch across the clouds.

Expert tip: Keep a slow, steady pace. Let your breathing guide you.

We start the morning with the Barranco Wall. It looks steep, but it’s actually fun — like a rocky staircase. You’ll use your hands a bit, and your team will cheer you on. Once you reach the top, the views are amazing. From there, the trail goes up and down through small valleys before we reach Karanga Camp. It’s a shorter day, giving you more time to rest and enjoy the quiet of the mountain.

Expert tip: Keep snacks in your pocket — today’s hike uses a lot of energy.

Today we make our way to base camp. The trail climbs steadily, and the land feels more like the moon — quiet, cold, and rocky. There aren’t many plants now, just stones and clouds. Barafu Camp sits high on a ridge, and from here, you can see the summit. We’ll arrive early so you can rest and eat before the big climb tonight. This is where the excitement really builds.

Expert tip: Lay out your summit clothes and gear before you sleep — you’ll be starting in the dark.

We wake up around midnight and start the summit push. It’s cold and dark, but the stars are bright, and your guide will keep the pace steady. Step by step, you’ll climb toward the top. When the sun rises near Stella Point, the sky turns pink and gold — it’s one of the most beautiful sights on the mountain. A little later, you’ll stand on Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa.

After photos and celebration, we start heading down. The descent to Barafu is tough on the knees, but lunch and rest will help. From there, we continue to Mweka Camp, where you’ll sleep lower and feel the air thicken again.

Expert tip: Celebrate at the summit, but save energy for the long way down.

It’s the last day, and the trail leads us down through the rainforest once more. The trees get taller, the air gets warmer, and birds sing all around. It’s a peaceful walk to the gate, where a cold drink and warm smiles are waiting. You’ve done something very few people ever do. You’ll never forget this mountain.

Expert tip: Celebrate every step today. You’ve earned it.
