Lake Natron National Park

Overview

Lake Natron, located in northern Tanzania near the border with Kenya, is a strikingly unique and remote saline lake renowned for its otherworldly appearance and extreme conditions. The lake is fed by the Ewaso Ng’iro River and is characterized by its high alkalinity, which is caused by the volcanic minerals from the nearby Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. This harsh environment creates a vivid red and orange coloration in the lake’s waters, giving it a surreal, almost alien appearance. Despite its harsh conditions, Lake Natron is a crucial breeding ground for the lesser flamingo, which thrives in its alkaline waters. The surrounding landscape includes dramatic volcanic formations and sparse vegetation, making it a captivating destination for those interested in natural extremes and unique ecosystems.

How to get there

To reach Lake Natron, travelers typically start from Arusha, which is about 200 kilometers (124 miles) away. The drive from Arusha to the lake takes approximately 4 to 6 hours, depending on road conditions. The route involves a combination of paved and rough, unpaved roads, so a 4×4 vehicle is recommended. Alternatively, visitors can arrange for a guided tour or safari package that includes transportation to and from Lake Natron, which often simplifies travel logistics. For those coming from Nairobi, Kenya, a longer drive or flight to Arusha followed by a road transfer can be arranged.
