Overview

Mikumi is one of the fourth largest national parks in Tanzania. Mikumi is located near the city of Morogoro and it is about 300km from Dar es salaam. It covers 3,230 sq km and it was established in 1964. Mikumi national park is a unique park because the main road at the gate and across the park itself.

The park is endowed with spectacular concentration of wildlife which are rarely seen in other parks.

Because of the gentle foothills and vast Miombo woodland savannah in the southern part of the park are very beautiful to visit.

Mikumi national Part and Selous National Park border each other. Selous is in the southern part of Mikumi National park. Also Mikumi is bordered with the Udzungwa Mountains and the Uluguru Mountains.

The Maludwe Mountains are found inside Mikumi. Maludwe is the highest belt of the hills runs through east to west of the park. It connects the Uluguru mountains and the Uvidunda and Udzungwa mountains in the west.

Mikumi National Park is often compared with the Serengeti National Park due to their similar landscapes. Mikumi is separated by the road that crosses within it. It is separated from north to south and has two different environments. The vegetation of Mikumi consists of Savannah dotted with big acacia and big giant baobab and some palm trees. In the North West area, the furthest from road area, there are some beautiful rock formations of the mount Rubeho and Uluguru.

Best time to visit

It is best to visit in wet season (Nov – May). That’s because the park becomes green and also attracts migratory birds.

Dry season (June – Oct). Optimal time to visit because its good for game drives as the weather is cooler and dry.
