Overview

Saanane Island National Park is a small Island sanctuary on the Lake Victoria, Saanane is the smallest National Park in East Africa and also the first to be located with city center. Saanane National Park is a national park and a fresh water island that is located within the district of Ilemela in Mwanza. The name saanane came from the local farmer and fisherman called Mree Saanane Chavandi.

The Saanane Island Game Sanctuary was accidentally the Iddi Amin Dada of Uganda and Tanzania war that was in 1978-1979. In 1979 Libya ordered a 9-22 to bomb to attack Mwanza region hoping to intimidate Tanzania to stop the war with Uganda, the impacts of the war were that six antelopes and many birds as well were killed and one person was slightly injured.

Best time to visit

Its best to visit during dry season for hiking and game drive and its during June to October

Bird watching during rainy season that is November to March.
